Women’s Basketball Falls to League Leading Princeton

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red women's basketball team put up a tough fight, but Ivy League leading Princeton proved to be too much to handle, as the Tigers defeated Cornell, 72-49, this evening at Newman Arena.

Cornell (6-15, 1-7) was led by Allie Fedorowicz with 15 points, while Clare Fitzpatrick chipped in 10. Senior point guard Lauren Benson handed out 10 assists, against just two turnovers, grabbed six rebounds and had three steals, while freshman Whitney Hagan led the team with eight rebounds.

Princeton (18-2, 7-0) got an 18-point, 15-rebound double-double from Niveen Rasheed, while Devona Allgood posted 16 points and nine boards, as the pair helped the Tigers outrebound Cornell, 45-46. Krystal Hill and Laura Johnson added 12 points apiece to the balanced Princeton offense.

Both teams shot well from the floor, with the Tigers connecting on 40 percent (30-75) from the floor and 31.3 percent (5-16) from 3-point range. The visitors also got a significant portion of its offense from 20 offensive rebounds that resulted in 23 points.

Cornell hit 39.6 percent overall (19-48) and 38.5 percent from 3-point range (5-13), but in the end, the team was done in by its 20 turnovers, which resulted in 25 Princeton points.

The Big Red remains in Ithaca as it welcomes Harvard and Dartmouth to Newman Arena on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20, respectively. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. Cornell will celebrate the Pink Zone vs. the Big Green. The Pink Zone is an NCAA initiative to raise awareness as well as funds for breast cancer research.
