Virginia McMunigal had 19 points and
Taylor Flynn added 12, but the Cornell women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 64-61 contest to visiting Dartmouth on Saturday night at Newman Arena in Ithaca. Cornell falls to 6-17 on the year and 1-9 in Ivy League play, while Dartmouth improves to 10-13 overall and 5-4 in league action.
With Dartmouth leading by five late in the second half, McMunigal hit a jumper and
Clare Fitzpatrick put back her own miss with seven seconds left, cutting the deficit to just one, 62-61. Cornell's
Lauren Benson fouled Dartmouth's Margaret Smith on the inbounds play, sending Smith to the line, where she hit both ends of a one-and-one, putting the Big Green back up by three, 64-61. Cornell advanced the ball into the front court, where Flynn was called for traveling with three seconds left. On the inbounds play under the Dartmouth basket, Margaret Smith caught the ball out of bounds, sending the ball back to Cornell for one last play, but a Big Green defender knocked the inbounds pass into the Cornell backcourt, and Flynn could not get off a desperation heave from midcourt before the buzzer sounded.
For Dartmouth, Margaret Smith and Brittney Smith tied for team high honors with 14 points apiece, while Sasha Dosenko and Faziah Steen both had 10 points, with Dosenko leading all Big Green players with 10 boards. The Big Green shot 39 percent from the floor for the game and 33 percent from three-point range.
Cornell also got eight points apiece from Fitzpatrick,
Allie Munson and
Kristina Danielak, with Munson pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Lauren Benson added 11 assists on the night for the Big Red, which shot 45 percent from the field and 53 percent from beyond the arc.
Cornell returns to the road for the final time in the 2009-10 season next weekend with the trip to Princeton and Penn. Cornell will tip off the weekend against the Tigers on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Princeton, N.J.
