Dryden, Nieuwendyk Reflect On Their Time At Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. -– Locke Jillson scored the game winner, while Riley Nash added a goal and an assist, as Cornell moved into second place in ECAC Hockey with a 4-1 win over Union Friday evening at Lynah Rink. Joe Devin and Sean Collins also scored for the Big Red, which locked up the second seed in the upcoming ECAC Hockey playoffs.

Blake Gallagher added a pair of assists for the Big Red on the night, which improved to 17-8-3 on the year and 14-5-2 in league play. Ben Scrivens picked up 29 saves in earning the victory for Cornell, which went 1-for-1 on the power play on the night. For Union (18-9-3, 12-5-4), Mario Valery-Trabucco scored the only goal, with goaltender Keith Kinkaid picking up 12 saves in the losing effort. The loss locks the Dutchmen into the third seed in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.

Prior to the game, Cornell retired the uniform numbers of goaltender Ken Dryden and forward Joe Nieuwendyk. The ceremony energized the Big Red, who scored just 2:52 into the first period while skating on a power play. Riley Nash received a pass from brother Brendon and fired a shot from the left circle that Kinkaid never saw.

Union tied the game at 15:20 of the first period when Valery-Trabucco picked up the puck in the neutral zone, circled back to his own blue line and skated into the Cornell end with the puck. There, he threw the puck toward the net, where it banked off a Cornell defenseman and into the Cornell goal, leaving a helpless Scrivens to only watch.

Cornell increased its lead to 3-1 on second period scores by Jillson and Devin. The Big Red had just finished a penalty kill when Jillson took a pass from Riley Nash, skated in alone on Kinkaid and fired a shot through the legs of the freshman netminder and into the net at 5:32 for a 2-1 advantage. Just over seven minutes later, Devin converted a wide-open back-door pass from Tyler Roeszler at 12:41 for his eighth goal of the season.

The Dutchmen outshot the Big Red 12-3 in the third period but were held scoreless. Kinkaid was pulled from the net for an extra attacker, but Collins converted a pass from Blake Gallagher and scored an empty-net goal with 32 seconds left to play.

Cornell closes out the regular season on Saturday night when it takes on Rensselaer in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. Saturday's game will also serve as Senior Day for the six Cornell seniors, who will be recognized in a ceremony after the game.
