BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The Big Red wrestling team won its fourth-straight EIWA championship on Sunday afternoon after capturing five individual titles. Head coach Rob Koll was named the 2010 EIWA Coach of the Year after helping Big Red wrestlers to place in nine weight classes. Cornell earned eight automatic bids to the NCAA tournament . Mack Lewnes won the Coaches' Award that is given to the tournament MVP as voted on by the coaches after winning the 174 pound weight class.
Nickerson opened the finals at 125 pounds facing off against Princeton's Garrett Frey. The 2009 NCAA champion took a 5-0 lead into the second period after a takedown and three back points. Frey chose to start the second period down and Nickerson rode him out for the two minutes. Nickerson chose to start the third down and Frey cut him loose looking to score. Nickerson took down Frey once again and turned him to his back to win by fall in 5:44.
Grey wrestled in his second EIWA championship final at 133 pounds and squared off against Matt Fisk of Lehigh. Grey had previously defeated Fisk in a dual in January, 8-3. The Big Red junior took a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the first period. Grey quickly escaped from his starting down position in the second to take a 3-0 advantage into the third. Fisk chose to start the third at neutral and quickly notched his first points with a takedown. Grey escaped and with a little under a minute left in the bout took a 6-2 lead with another takedown. Fisk was hit with his third caution and with riding time, Grey won an 8-2 decision.
At 141 pounds, No. 1 nationally ranked Dake won his championship bout with a 9-2 decision over American's Jordan Lipp. Dake held a 2-0 lead after the first period when he notched a takedown with a little over 30 seconds left in the period. Lipp chose to start the second at neutral and shot in at Dake looking to score. Dake countered Lipp's attack for another takedown and notched two quick back points to increase his advantage to 6-0. After two periods, Dake racked up 1:56 in riding time. The Big Red wrestler chose to start the third period down and escaped to go up 7-0. Lipp notched his first takedown of the bout with 1:15 left in the match, but Dake would escape and with 1:26 in riding time recorded the 9-2 decision.
At 174 pounds, Lewnes wrestled in his third EIWA championship bout taking on Scott Giffin of Penn. Lewnes notched two takedowns in the first period and almost earned back points but time ran out. Lewnes chose to start the second period down on the mat. The Big Red junior worked his way to his feet and kicked free from Giffin's grasp for an escape. With 30 seconds left in the bout, Lewnes notched another takedown to walk away with a 9-2 victory.
Sophomore Cam Simaz won his second-straight EIWA title at 197 pounds by edging out Penn's Micah Burak, 3-1. Simaz notched a quick takedown in the first with just a few seconds off the clock and racked up 1:03 in riding time before Burak escaped. Burak deferred choice in the second and Simaz chose down. The Big Red wrestler quickly escaped to increase his advantage to 3-1. Neither wrestler scored again in the second, and Burak chose to start the third at neutral after winding Simaz's riding time under a minute in the second. The two wrestlers were scoreless in the third to give Simaz his 3-1 victory.
The Big Red opened the day with the place matches. First up for Cornell was Justin Kerber at 165 pounds. Kerber had already qualified for the NCAA tournament after securing at least a sixth-place finish in his weight class on Saturday evening. In his first consolation bout, Kerber defeated Penn's Stephen Burak by a 6-4 score. Kerber placed fourth after defeating Columbia's Eren Civan, 3-1 in sudden victory.
At 184 pounds, sophomore Steve Bosak advanced to the third place bout by pinning Bucknell's Rob Waltko in 4:01. In a fight for third place, Bosak was edged out by the third-seed David Craig of Lehigh, 8-5 in the final seconds of the match.
At heavyweight, Josh Arnone opened with a 6-1 victory over Kevin Lester of Columbia to advance to the third place bout. Arnone qualified for his second NCAA tournament with a 4-3 victory over Penn's Tyler Blakely. In his third place bout, Arnone needed to win his match in order to automatically qualify for the NCAAs. Blakely notched the first points of the bout with a takedown early in the first period, but Arnone quickly escaped. With 30 seconds left in the first, Arnone caught hold of both of Blakely's legs to bring him down for a takedown at the edge of the mat. The wrestlers were brought back to center and Arnone rode him out for the remainder of the period. Arnone chose to start the second period down and quickly escape to take a 4-2 lead into the third. Blakely chose to start the third down and notched an escape, but Arnone continued a strong defense on his way to a 4-3 decision.
At 149 pounds, Corey Manson finished in eighth place after falling to Rutgers' David Greenwald in 6:35.
