Cornell Wrestling Splits Duals at Lehigh, Bucknell

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — No. 20 Cornell wrestling split a demanding road doubleheader on Saturday, falling 20-17 to No. 22 Lehigh in the afternoon before rebounding with a 26-9 victory over Bucknell later that night.

Against Lehigh, the Big Red came up just short in a tightly contested dual that featured four bonus-point wins between the two teams. Cornell earned victories at four weights, highlighted by dominant performances from Jaxon Joy, Simon Ruiz and Meyer Shapiro.

Joy delivered a major decision at 149 pounds, shutting out Owen Reinsel 9-0, while Shapiro followed with a technical fall at 157, rolling to an 18-3 win over Griffin Gonzalez in seven minutes.

Simon Ruiz also won by technical fall (15-0) and Christian Hansen added a key decision at 184, defeating Rylan Rogers 7-3 to keep Cornell within striking distance late in the dual.

Lehigh secured the team win behind technical falls from Max Brignola (165), along with narrow decisions at 141, 197 and heavyweight. The Mountain Hawks sealed the dual at 125 pounds, where Sheldon Seymour earned an 8-2 decision over Greg Diakomihalis.

Cornell responded emphatically in the nightcap, racing out to a 20-0 lead and cruising past Bucknell, 26-9. The Big Red won seven of the 10 bouts, including four bonus-point victories.

Diakomihalis set the tone at 125 with a 10-2 major decision, followed by Tyler Ferrara's 13-4 major at 133. Vince Cornella continued the night with a 4-0 decision at 141, and Joy continued his dominant day by recording a 17-2 technical fall at 149.

Shapiro added another major decision at 157, and Simon Ruiz picked up a ranked win at 174, knocking off No. 21 Myles Takats, 5-2. Hansen also secured a decision at 184 to cap Cornell's scoring.

With the split, Cornell showed resilience across a long day on the road, bouncing back from a narrow afternoon setback with a commanding evening performance.
