ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell opened defense of its 2009 Ivy League title with a doubleheader sweep of Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. The Big Red improved to 14-7 (2-0 Ivy) with 5-2 and 5-3 victories. Dartmouth slipped to 1-17 (0-2 Ivy) with the losses.
Cornell scored three runs in the first inning of each game and never trailed, though the Big Red did need a two-run homer by
Erin Keene in the sixth inning of game two to claim the sweep. Seniors
Alyson Intihar and
Elise Menaker each had three hits on the day.
In game one,
Elizabeth Dalrymple struck out 14 hitters and allowed just six base runners in the 5-2 victory. Cornell scored three unearned runs in the first, then added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Dartmouth's only runs came on a two-run blast by Molly Khalil in the seventh to avoid the shutout. Menaker went 2-of-3 in support of Dalrymple, while
Izzy Pines had a single, was hit by a pitch and stole a base. Intihar had a lead-off single to set the tone and scored twice.
Game two saw Cornell jump out to a 3-0 edge on the strength of four straight hits to start the contest. The Big Green rallied to tie in the fifth, but Keene's first career bomb was the difference. Sophomore
Lauren Marx improved to 4-1 on the mound by coming out of the bullpen to allow just two hits in the final 2.2 innings. COrnell pounded out 10 hits in the nightcap.
The Big Red returns to action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. when it meets Harvard at Niemand*Robison Field.
