CAMDEN, N.J. – The Cornell heavyweight rowing squad had an exceptional day at the 108th annual IRA Regatta this afternoon on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J., with all four boats racing in the Grand Finals and two of the four finishing in the top-three of their respective races. Overall, it is the best team finish since 1981 when the Big Red had the varsity-8 (first), the second varsity-8 (second) and the Freshman-8 (fifth) row in the Grand Finals.
The highlight of the day came in the final race, as the Big Red's Varsity-8 took the bronze medal in the Grand Finals, coming in right behind the two top-ranked crews, Cal and Washington. The third-place finish by Cornell is its best finish at the IRA since taking third in 1994.
The Open-4+ also had an outstanding day, beating the field by nearly five seconds to earn the gold medal, while the Freshman-8 and the Second Varsity-8 took fourth and fifth, respectively.
Please check back on Monday for Coach Kennett's IRA wrap-up.
