HAMILTON, N.Y. -- A pair of unlucky bounces was the difference in the game as the Cornell women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest to Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon in the Colgate Nike Classic in Hamilton, N.Y. The loss sends Cornell to 1-3 on the year, while Seton Hall improves to 3-3.
Kelly Murphy made eight saves in taking the loss for the Big Red, which was shut out for the first time in 2010. Cornell was out-shot, 20-7, for the game, with Seton Hall netminder Elizabeth Bond stopping a pair of shots in the victory.
The Pirates got on the board first in the second minute, capitalizing on an unlucky bounce in front of the Cornell goal. A Seton Hall corner kick was headed away from danger toward the top of the box, but the rebound came off to Kaitlyn Ritter, who struck a shot that took a deflection off a Cornell defender and caught Murphy leaning the wrong way and caromed into the goal.
Cornell held with the Pirates for the rest of the first half, despite being out-shot 11-2, and came out fighting for the tying goal in the second half. The Big Red had several chances in the second half, but Bond was there to keep the Big Red off the board.
The Pirates closed out the scoring with eight seconds left in the match when Marie Klemme sent a cross from the left side to the far post, where Katie Andreski struck a shot that rang off the underside of the crossbar and down into the goal for the final margin.
Cornell returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Bucknell for a 3 p.m. contest against the Bison in Lewisburg, Pa.
