ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red field hockey team gave No. 3 Virginia all it could handle for the first 35 minutes of the contest, but couldn't hold off the 10th-ranked offense in the nation, as the Cavaliers came back to take the 5-2 victory this afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. With the victory, Virginia remains perfect at 9-0, while the Big Red falls to 5-2 on the season.
Catie De Stio scored both of Cornell's goals, moving into second place in Big Red history for goals in a career (30).
Paige Selenski, the second leading scorer in the nation, helped her cause with a pair of goals and one assist for the Cavaliers, while Elly Buckley scored twice and Haley Carpenter had a goal and two assists.
In goal,
Alex Botte kept the Big Red in the contest with a career-high 11 saves, as Virginia held the edge in shots (20-9), shots on goal (16-6) and penalty corners (8-5).
For the Cavaliers, Adrienne Ostroff and Kim Kastuk split time in goal. Each made a pair saves and allowed one goal with Kastuk earning the win.
Virginia opened the scoring at the 13:59 mark as Selenski scored off a rebound following a save by Botte, but less than 10 minutes later De Stio tied the game when she scored on a hard angle shot from the left side of the net.
After going into the intermission tied at 1-1, the Cavaliers made a goalie change and turned up the offensive pressure. Selenski wasted little time, scoring less than two minutes into the second half when she tallied on a scrum in front of the net following a penalty corner.
UVA rattled off three goals in a span of 11 minutes to put the game out of reach, but De Stio put one more goal on the board for the Big Red in the 67th minute when she scored on a breakaway.
The Big Red remains in Ithaca for a pair of games next weekend when it welcomes Yale and St. Francis (Pa.) to Marsha Dodson Field. The game against the Bulldogs will be played on Saturday, Oct. 2 at noon, before Cornell faces the Red Flash on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m.
