ITHACA, N.Y. --
Kristina Jackson scored her first career goal in the second half, but Delaware responded with the game-winner just a minute and a half later as the Blue Hens scored a 2-1 victory over the Big Red on Friday night at Berman Field in Ithaca. Delaware improved to 2-1 on the year, while Cornell fell to 0-1 in its season opener.
Freshman
Rachel Nichols picked up an assist on Jackson's goal for her first career point, while
Megan Bartlett made four saves in taking the loss for Cornell in goal. For Delaware, Shannon Kearney and Ali Miller both scored a goal, with Morgan Warrington and Andrea Arnold both picking up an assist in the match. Delaware netminder Breanna Stemler made a pair of saves in earning the victory.
After a scoreless first half that was fairly even despite Delaware's 8-1 edge in shots, Cornell came out with the best chance of the match early in the second half when
Lena Russomagno's one-time volley banged off the crossbar just three minutes after the break. Ultimately, though, it would be Delaware getting on the board first in the 53rd minute when Warrington sent a cross in from the right to Kearney, who slipped in behind the Cornell defense and beat Bartlett one-on-one, sending her shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
Cornell would get the equalizer in the 72nd minute when Nichols had a shot from about 20 yards out blocked by the Delaware defense. The deflection carried to the side of the Delaware goal and onto the foot of Jackson, who deftly controlled the ball, moved around Stemler and slotted a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
Delaware grabbed the lead for good in the 73rd minute, as Arnold played a through ball that Miller ran onto, and her sliding effort beat a diving attempt by Bartlett in a race for the ball, as Miller's poke slipped just inside the near post for what turned out to be the game-winning tally.
Cornell returns to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Berman Field against Delaware State.
