ITHACA, N.Y . – The Cornell field hockey team found itself in a wild game this afternoon and needed an overtime goal by Olivia Boyd to defeat Delaware after the Big Red relinquished a two-goal lead in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Cornell escaped Bob Carpenter Sports Center with a 4-3 victory and improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Blue Hens fell to 1-2.

In all, the Big Red got goals from four different players, including Boyd, Kat DiPastina, Kate Thompson and Hannah Balleza. Cornell outshot the Bluehens, 21-15, but the home team held the 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Inbetween the pipes, Alex Botte made seven saves, including one in the overtime period, while Delaware goalie Noelle Diana stopped 11 shots in the loss.

Boyd's heroics came at the 76:31 mark of the game, as she collected the ball off a Mattie Prodanovic shot that was initially saved and slotted it past Diana to hand Cornell the victory.

The game was forced into overtime after the Bluehens earned a penalty corner as time expired in regulation. The initial penalty corner was saved by Botte, but Delaware kept the ball in the circle and Melissa LeNoir scored off a pass from Michelle Drummonds. It was Drummonds that had brought the Bluehens within striking distance, making it a one-goal game when she scored at the 63:28 mark to cut Cornell's lead to 3-2.

The Big Red got on the board in the 12th minute of the contest off a goal by DiPastina, who tipped a shot by Katie Laventure into the net, but just over 10 minutes later, LeNoir answered to knot the game at 1-1.

Cornell scored twice in an eight minute span midway through the second period as Thomspon made it a 2-1 game off a great individual effort before Balleza scored off a loose ball from five-yards out to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Big Red remains on the road next season as it travels to Bucknell on Saturday, Sept. 11, before playing St. Joseph's College, at Drexel University, on Sunday, Sept. 12.
