Harvard Rolls Past Women’s Basketball

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Harvard women's basketball team used a prolonged 21-2 run over an eight minute span late in the first half to erase a Cornell lead and take control of the game en route to a 67-36 victory this evening at Newman Arena. With the loss, the Big Red falls to 5-13 overall and evens its record in the Ivy League at 2-2, while the Crimson improves to 11-6 overall and remains perfect in the conference at 3-0.

Cornell was led by Taylor Flynn and Clare Fitzpatrick with 10 points apiece. Flynn added four rebounds and two assists, while Fitzpatrick tallied three rebounds, two blocks, one steal and one assist. Allyson DiMagno grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Harvard's Victoria Lippert registered 15 points, while Miriam Rutzen finished with 12 points, five blocks and four rebounds. Christine Clark pulled down a game-high eight rebounds, as she helped the Crimson to a 43-27 edge on the boards.

The Crimson shot lights out in the first half, knocking down 55 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc to take a commanding 38-18 lead into the intermission. Harvard finished at 43 percent for the game, while holding the Big Red to a season-low 23 percent shooting.

Cornell finished with just four more turnovers than the Crimson (20-16), but Harvard was able to capitalize on the Big Red's miscues, outscoring the home team 26-7 in points off turnovers. The Crimson also scored 18 points on second-chance baskets with 18 offensive rebounds, while limiting Cornell to just five points on 11 offensive boards.

The Big Red wraps up a five-game homestand next weekend as it welcomes Yale and Brown to Newman Arena on Friday, Feb. 4, and Saturday, Feb. 5, respectively. Both games are slated to tip-off at 7 p.m.
