Box Score
HAMDEN, Conn. --
Joe Devin scored the overtime game-winner to cap a three-point night, lifting the Cornell men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory on Saturday night at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Devin had a pair of goals and an assist on the night as Cornell evened its league mark at 4-4 this season.
Nick D'Agostino added a goal for Cornell, while
Tyler Roeszler had two assists and
Greg Miller added one.
Andy Iles stopped 32 shots in taking the win for the Big Red.
For Quinnipiac (11-10-2, 5-6-2 ECAC Hockey), Spencer Heichmann and Scott Zurevinski scored goals while Zach Currie, Cory Hibbeler, Zach Hansen and Kellen Jones each added an assist. Eric Hartzell picked up 24 saves in the loss for Quinnipiac, which went scoreless in two power-play chances.
Cornell (6-8-1, 4-4 ECAC Hockey) got on the board first when Roeszler picked up a loose puck in the corner to the left of Hartzell and found a streaking Devin in the slot. The pass was on target, and Devin's wrist shot beat Hartzell on the first shot of the game for the Big Red, just 1:35 into the contest.
That lead would stand until the second period when a two-on-one break developed in front of Iles, and Currie slotted a pass to Heichmann, who roofed a shot under the crossbar at the 10:24 mark of the second. It took the Big Red just five minutes to respond, as Roeszler sent a pas to Devin, who faked a shot and sent a pass to the weak side post for D'Agostino, who was wide open at the edge of the crease, and the sophomore shoveled the puck into the open net for the 2-1 lead.
Cornell carried the lead through the rest of the period and through most of the third, until the closing seconds of the contest. With Hartzell on the bench for an extra skater, a turnover just inside the Cornell blue line led to Zach Hansen weaving through two Cornell defenders and slipping a pass to the weak side post for Zurevinski, who shoveled the puck into the net with 7.4 seconds left in the third period, sending the game into overtime.
Cornell responded in the extra session, though, as a turnover by the Bobcats in front of the Quinnipiac bench saw Miller send a tape-to-tape pass to Devin at the Quinnipiac blue line, freed on a two-on-one breakaway with Roeszler. Devin skated in to the faceoff dot to the left of Hartzell and ripped a shot under the crossbar, sparking the wild celebration off the Cornell bench.
The Big Red returns to action next weekend, coming home to Lynah Rink for the first time since Dec. 4 when it takes on Rensselaer in a 7 p.m. contest. Friday's game will be televised in Central New York and in the Albany area on Time Warner Cable Sports.
