Dartmouth Nips Volleyball In Hanover

HANOVER, N.H. – After picking up its first Ivy League win of the season last evening, the Big Red volleyball team was nipped by Dartmouth, falling 3-0, today in Leede Arena in Hanover, N.H. The Big Green earned the straight-set victory: 25-19, 25-22, 25-17.

Cornell (3-16, 1-6) was led by Kelly Marble, who posted team highs in kills (10) and hitting percentage (.269). Madeleine Przybyl and Janel Forte also chipped in eight and seven kills respectively, while Rachel D'Epagnier tallied six kills and a match-high five block assists. Freshman setter Kelly Reinke had 20 assists and eight digs, while senior setter Jordan Reeder posted an 18-assist, 15-dig double-double. Senior libero Risa Ka'awa had a team-high 17 digs.

Dartmouth (11-7, 3-4) had a trio of players – Madeline Baird (14), Annie Villanueva (11) and Meghan Cooney (11) – finish with double digit kills. Setter Alissa Santa Maria posted 36 assists and libero Amber Bryant tallied 18 digs.

The Big Red hit an impressive .286 in the first set (14-4-35) and kept it close throughout, but after pulling within one-point at 16-15, Dartmouth closed the set on a 9-4 run to earn the 25-19 victory.

The second set was the closest of the night with 15 ties and seven lead changes. The teams played all the way to a 22-22 tie, but a Cornell attack error, followed by back-to-back kills from Baird sealed the 25-23 win for the home team.

Cornell kept it close in the third set as well with a kill from Marble making it a 10-9 Big Green lead, but Dartmouth responded with a 7-2 run to break open the set before rolling to the 25-17 victory.

The Big Red begins the second half of Ivy League play with a trip to Columbia on Oct. 22. Cornell and the Lions will square off at Levien Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
