ITHACA, N.Y. -- It's been a long offseason for the Cornell men's polo team and the Virginia women's squad. Each team watched its counterpart win a national title, and this weekend each will get a chance for revenge. And for the Virginia men and the Cornell women, it will be the first opportunity to show each is capable of repeating.
The Big Red men's and women's polo teams will head to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend to take on Virginia in rematches of the 2011 national championship games held at Cornell's Oxley Equestrian Center. Though this year's matchups won't have nearly as much on the line, they will be early indicators of what the national championship landscape may look like at the 2012 championships.
The women will play on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a rematch of last season's final, won by Cornell 18-10 to clinch the program's 13th national title. The victory capped a perfect 21-0 campaign that included four wins over the Cavaliers by an average margin of 9.8 goals per game.
The Big Red women lead the all-time series 88-26-2, including six straight victories over the last two years after the Cavaliers spoiled Cornell's undefeated bid in 2009-10 with a 19-17 upset in the national final.
Cornell is coming off a dominating 36-1 triumph over Massachusetts in the 2011-12 opener behind Kailey Eldredge's 14 goals and 10 from Ali Hoffman.
The Big Red men also come into Saturday's 2 p.m. rematch with the Cavaliers in high spirits after last weekend's 44-0 shuout of Skidmore. Nik Feldman scored 14 goals and Branden Van Loon had 10 in the tuneup for UVa.
The Cavaliers were unmatched a season ago en route to a national title, topping Cornell three times, including a 28-14 decision in the finals. The perennial national championship contenders have played at least twice in each season dating back to the 1978-79 season, with Virginia leading 61-39-2. The Cavaliers hold a 12-game win streak in the series dating back to a 16-15 Big Red victory in the 2008 national semifinals.
