STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut proved that Cornell continuing its East dominance is not a certainty when it knocked off the Big Red 24-16 on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red, which has won the last nine East regional titles, hopes that history will repeat itself, after the Huskies won last year's first meeting before Cornell advanced all the way to the national finals.
The Big Red got off to a good start with
Connor Pardell,
Branden Van Loon and Nick Stieg sticking to the game plan and taking a 2-0 lead. The Huskies answered with two of their own to tie before Cornell went on a two-goal run and ended the first chukker leading 4-3.
Nik Feldman replaced Pardell in the second and the Huskies immediately jumped on the Big Red for six unanswered goals to take a to take a 9-5 lead. After a quick in chukker adjustment, Cornell answered back and managed a tie at 9-9 heading into the half. Pardell replaced Feldman for the third. The Huskies took advantage of every Cornell error in the third and rode a 17-12 lead into the fourth. In the fourth, some growing pain mistakes got the Cornell men out of their game and UConn again made them pay for each one with a tally to make the final score 24-16 in favor of the Huskies.
The bright spot for the day was that the Red were much improved on their foul shooting as they were successful on 5-of-6 Penalty #2, #3, & #4's for the day. Van Loon led the way with nine goals, while Pardell and Stieg had three each and Feldman scored once.
The two teams will meet again when UConn visits Oxley Equestrian Center on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
