ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will host arguably the best in-season collegiate polo tournament in the nation again this year when the Bill Field Invitational begins on Wednesday at Oxley Equestrian Center. On the men's side, defending national champion Virginia highlights five visiting schools who will compete with Cornell, while the women's side also five additional schools.
The Big Red women, the defending national champion, will put its 46-game home win streak on the line when it meets Skidmore on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., then is scheduled to meet Kentucky on Saturday at 6 p.m. The women's final will be held on Sunday at 10 a.m. Other schools competing include Yale, Connecticut and Virginia.
The women, 2-2 on the year, won the Field Invite a year ago with triumphs over Skidmore (21-6), Virginia (18-14) and Kentucky in the title game (21-15) en route to a perfect 21-0 campaign. The Big Red has won three straight championships in the tournament with the last loss coming to Virginia during the 2007-08 campaign, 15-12.
The Big Red women's last loss at Oxley Equestrian Center came on March 16, 2008, when it dropped a 26-8 contest to Connecticut in the finals of the Eastern Regional championship. Since then, Cornell has reeled off 46 consecutive victories and has outscored opponents 1,063-376 for an average score of 23-8.
The men kick off the tournament against Kentucky on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. and also face Colorado State on Saturday at 8 p.m. The championship game will be held on Sunday at noon. Other schools competing include Yale, Connecticut and Virginia.
Cornell brings a 3-2 record into the tournament, which was won last season by Virginia with a 19-10 victory over the Big Red in the final.
