ITHACA, N.Y. -- A year ago, the Cornell men's polo team avenged an early season loss to Connecticut by knocking off the Huskies a week later. The Big Red eventually advanced all the way to the national finals. Cornell can only hope to see the same type of improvements throughout the season, but the year has started out in an eerily similar fashion.
After dropping a 24-16 contest last Sunday in Storrs, Conn., the Cornell men looked to return the favor to the Huskies. Nick Stieg,
Branden Van Loon, and
Nik Feldman started and played the entire game against the confident UConn squad. After beating up on the Big Red in the second half this past Sunday, the Huskies quickly jumped out to the lead in Saturday night's game. In fact, Cornell's only goals of the first all came from
Nik Feldman's perfect penalty shooting of 3-for-3 as the Big Red trailed 6-3 after the first chukker. Cornell worked hard in the second and managed to tie the score at 6-6 just before the Huskies tallied twice to take an 8-6 lead. After the teams traded goals, UConn went up 9-7 at the half. The third chukker is where Cornell turned this game around, outscoring the visitors 9-0 and take a commanding 16-9 lead going into the fourth. Cornell stretched the lead to 18-10 before the Huskies fought back to put the final score at 20-14 in favor of Cornell. Van Loon tallied eight goals, Feldman had seven and Stieg went for five to lead the Big Red.
