TROY, N.Y. -- Joe Devin scored the game-winning goal with 1:28 left in overtime as the Cornell men's hockey team scored a 3-2 victory over No. 8/8 Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House in Troy, N.Y.

Vince Mihalek and Sean Collins added goals for the Big Red, while John Esposito, Sean Whitney, Mike Devin and Tyler Roeszler each added an assist. Andy Iles stopped 29 shots in picking up the victory for the Big Red (12-10-3, 10-6-2 ECAC Hockey), which finished the night 1-for-8 on the power play.

For Rensselaer, Chase Polacek and Alex Angers-Goulet tallied goals, with assists going to Nick Bailen, Justin Smith and John Kennedy. Bryce Merriam made 20 saves in taking the loss for the Engineers (18-8-4, 10-7-1 ECAC Hockey). Rensselaer finished the night 1-for-7 on the power play.

Mihalek got the Big Red on the scoreboard with his first career goal just 6:50 into the game. Esposito started the play by intercepting the puck in the neutral zone and carrying it into the Rensselaer end before laying it off for Mihalek, who ripped a wrist shot that beat Merriam high to the stick side for the early lead.

Rensselaer tied the score less than two minutes later with a power-play goal from Polacek, who split through the Cornell defense before unleashing a wrist shot from the top of the circles that went high on the stick side past Iles, knotting the score at one at the 8:34 mark of the first period.

Collins then put Cornell back on top at the 10:15 mark of the first, taking an outlet pass from Whitney and firing his wrist shot from the faceoff dot to the left of Merriam, beating the netminder past the stick side shoulder.

Rensselaer again tied the score, this time in the second period, with Smith chipping the puck to spring Angers-Goulet past the Cornell defense, and Angers-Goulet just chipped his shot over the sprawling Iles, knotting the score at two 4:41 into the second period.

In the overtime, Cornell, while killing off a five-minute major penalty against Greg Miller, Cornell had one outstanding short-handed chance, as a whiffed shot by Rensselaer's Bailen turned into a two-on-none breakaway for Cornell's Locke Jillson and Sean Collins, but Collins' attempt went wide of the goal. Later, though, an interference call on Rensselaer's Bryan Brutlag gave Cornell a power-play, and the Big Red converted, with Roeszler sending a cross-ice pass to Mike Devin, whose shot was tipped over Merriam's shoulder for the game-winner with 1:28 to play.

The Big Red returns to action on Friday, taking on rival Harvard in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. Friday's game will feature the Big Red wearing 1967 throwback sweaters with the nameplates bearing the favorite players of the Lynah Faithful. The sweaters will then be auctioned off to benefit a mission trip this summer. Bids are now being accepted for the jerseys on the men's hockey page at CornellBigRed.com.
