Game 1 Box Score (Bucknell 4, Cornell 1)
Game 2 Box Score (Binghamton 2, Cornell 1 - 8 innings)
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Cornell softball team dropped a pair of contests on Sunday to finish the Mason Invitational with a 1-3 record, dropping contests to defending Patriot League champion Bucknell 4-1 before falling to Central New York rival Binghamton 2-1 in eight innings. The Big Red dropped to 2-4 on the season with the losses.
Cornell got another excellent performance from senior pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple, who took her second hard-luck loss in as many weekends against Binghamton. She went the distance, scattering five hits and walking one with nine strikeouts. Dalrymple only allowed one earned run in her 15.0 innings of work on the weekend.
Freshman Christina Villalon was 2-for-3 with a triple in game two, while Kristen Towne was 1-for-3 with an RBI. In game one, five different players collected a hit apiece, with Walisiak going 1-for-2 with a walk. Marx took the loss in the circle after allowing six hits and two earned runs over three innings, while Tomlinson pitched the final four without surrendering a run.
The Big Red never led in game one, falling behind 2-0 after an inning and a half before scoring in the bottom of the second to get back within 2-1. Ali Tomlinson doubled with one out, then scored on a single by Cassie Walisiak one batter later. The Bison would score two more to extend the lead to 4-1 before the Big Red threatened in the seventh.
With two outs, freshman Sarah McCormack doubled to center, followed by a walk to Walisiak to bring the tying run to the plate. Marissa Amiraian drove a line drive to center, but it was tracked down for the final out to give the Bison a weekend split with their Ivy rival.
Dalrymple labored through the first inning of game two, but allowed just one run to limit the damage. Cornell was hitless for the first three innings, but Towne broke through with an RBI single in the fourth to tie it up. The game remained that way until the eighth inning, when Binghamton scored a run-scoring groundout. The Big Red, after placing Amiraian at second to open the inning, advanced her to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was thrown out trying to steal home in an attempt to tie the contest.
The Big Red returns to action on Friday, March 18 for the three-day Mason Cherry Blossom Classic in Fairfax, Va. where it will face Howard, Albany, Monmouth and George Mason.
