PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Big Red wrestling team finished day two of the NCAA tournament in second place behind Penn State on Friday night. Sophomore
Kyle Dake advanced to his second-straight finals and will wrestle Nittany Lion wrestler Frank Molinaro. Cornell made school history with a record five All-Americans. Four Big Red wrestlers will compete Saturday morning in the place matches including
Mike Grey (133),
Mack Lewnes (174),
Steve Bosak (184) and
Cam Simaz (197).
At 149 pounds, Dake opened the day with a 3-0 decision over the No. 5 seed Jamal Parks of Oklahoma State. In the semifinals, after a scoreless first period against American's Ganbayar Sanjaa, Dake kicked free of his opening down position for a one point escape. In the third period, Sanjaa was hit with his third caution to give Dake a point. Dake took a 3-0 lead when Sanjaa was cautioned yet again. With riding time, Dake won a 4-0 decision.
At 174 pounds, senior Lewnes advanced to the semifinals with a 7-3 win over Central Michigan's Ben Bennett. In the semis, Lewnes was edged out by No. 7 Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford, 5-2. Lewnes will wrestle Colby Covington of Oregon State.
Bosak earned valuable bonus points for Cornell in his quarterfinal bout at 184 pounds by winning by technical fall, 16-0 in 6:28 over Duke's Diego Bencomo. In the semis, Bosak had a rematch of the EIWA finals against Lehigh's Robert Hamlin. The two were tied, 2-2, after regulation sending the bout into sudden victory. Hamlin won with a takedown by a 4-2 decision. Bosak will take on No. 1 Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro.
At 197 pounds, Simaz wowed the Cornell crowd by pinning No. 8 Matt Powless of Indiana in 2:20. In the semis, Simaz and Dustin Kilgore of Kent State traded points back and forth throughout their bout. In the end Kilgore held the slight edge and won a 10-9 decision. In the wrestlebacks, Simaz will face Iowa's Luke Lofthouse.
At 125 pounds,
Frank Perrelli lost his consolation match to Matthew Snyder of Virginia by a 12-4 major decision. Senior
Corey Manson lost a 3-0 decision to Pitt's Tyler Nauman, 3-0. At 157 pounds,
DJ Meagher dropped a 10-7 decision to No. 11 Walter Peppelman of Harvard. At 165 pounds, Kerber opened with an 8-4 win over Ross Tice of Kent State, 8-4. Kerber lost his second bout by a 6-2 decision to No. 11 Aaron Janssen of Iowa.
Place matches will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The finals will be held at 7:30 p.m.
