FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Cornell softball team completed the Mason Cherry Blossom Classic with a 3-2 record after splitting a pair of games on Saturday and winning its lone contest on Sunday at GMU Softball Complex. The Big Red improved to 5-6 on the season.
In the loss to Monmouth, Marissa Amiraian was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lauren Bucolo was 2-for-2 at the plate, but three unearned runs on three fielding errors doomed the Big Red. Cornell rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth to get within 5-3, but Monmouth answered with two in the bottom of the inning to earn the win.
The Big Red avenged two earlier losses to George Mason this season with a 5-0 shutout win on Saturday evening. Amirain was again 3-for-4, while Christina Villalon and Cassie Walisiak each had a pair of hits. On the mound, Jenna Stoller and Elizabeth Dalrymple combined for the shutout, as Stoller allowed just two hits over five innings and Dalrymple collected the save with three strikeouts in the final two innings. Cornell wore pink uniforms in support of breast cancer awareness for the game.
Cornell ended the weekend on a high note, rallying for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and holding on for a 5-1 victory. Dalrymple picked up the win in the circle with a three-hitter, striking out four to move to 2-3. Kristen Towne and Erin Keene were each 2-for-3, with Towne's RBI triple in the sixth highlighting the comeback.
