FARMVILLE, Va. -- Kristen Towne slammed a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Elizabeth Dalrymple made it stand up as Cornell knocked off Longwood in game one as the Big Red and the Lancers split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. Cornell won game one 4-2 in eight innings and dropped game two 9-1. The Big Red moved to 7-11-1, while Longwood's record stands at 16-7.

Towne's sixth home of the season capped a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored, while Lauren Bucolo and Erin Keene each had a pair of hits. Dalrymple surrendered just two hits, both solo home runs, and struck out eight in eight innings for her eighth consecutive complete game to open 2011 in improving to 4-3.

Cornell ended game one with 10 hits, but it was the Lancers who got on the scoreboard first. Nichole Simmons hit a two-out homer in the third to put the home team on the board, but the Big Red answered right back with two runs. Bucolo doubled to open the fourth, followed by a single by Towne and a run-scoring single by Christina Villalon. Keene then seinged to give Cornell the lead and the Big Red its fourth consecutive hit to open the inning.

Longwood tied it up in the fifth when Briana Wells led off the inning with a homer to knot the game at 2-2, but it would be the last hit Dalrymple would surrender. The senior retired the final 12 hitters, with Towne's extra-inning blast proving to be the difference.

In game two, Longwood scored once in the first, three times in the third and twice more in the fourth inning to put away the visitors, who collected three hits. Marissa Amiraian was 2-for-3 and drove in the Big Red's only run of the contest.
