Softball Sweeps Mount St. Mary's, Bucknell

EMMITTSBURG, Md. -- Erin Belles hit two home runs, Kristen Towne continued her hitting tear with a game-winning hit and Elizabeth Dalrymple tossed another complete game shutout as the Cornell softball team swept a pair of games, knocking off Mount St. Mary's 4-3 and defending Patriot League champion Bucknell 6-0 on Saturday afternoon. Cornell improved to 9-11-1 on the season with its first two-game sweep of the year. The Big Red will close out its spring break trip tomorrow with single games against both teams.

Belles hit a home run in each game, while Towne drove in a run in the seventh to give the Big Red a 4-3 victory over the host school in game one. Belles then slammed a two-run shot in the second game as Dalrymple pitched a five-hit shutout, striking out 10 in the victory in improving to 5-3 on the season. She now has completed each of th enine games she has started and lowered her ERA to 0.77 on the season.

Cornell's first game went back and forth, with Cornell taking a lead twice only to see the Mount tie it up before Towne's big hit. The Big Red took advantage of three first inning walks and a Kristen Towne single scored the first run. Mount St. Mary's got it back to a 1-1 tie in the third after a one-out triple by Chloe Mizianty, who scored on a bunt by Taylor Beebe to knot the game.

Belles picked an opportune time for his first career home run, slamming a two-run shot in the sixth to put the Big Red back up, but the home team again rallied in the bottom of the inning, setting up Towne's heroics in the top of the seventh. Marissa Amiraian opened the seventh with a single to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice fly. After a pop up, Towne drilled a pitch to right to put Cornell up for good.

Towne was 3-for-4  with a double as the lone player with multiple hits for the Big Red. Ali TOmlinson was outstanding in the circle, pitching arguably her top game of the season. She scattered seven hits while striking out seven in a complete game victory.

In game two, the Big Red dodged a bullet as Dalrymple was able to extricate herself from a bases loaded, one out situation. Cornell put itself up when Erin Keene slammed a home run to left center to lead off the second inning, her second big fly of the season. The Big Red scored two more in the frame ona wild pitch and a fielder's choice, then upped the lead to 4-0 on a solo homer by Christina Villalon in the fourth. Villalon ended the day 2-for-3 with the homer. Belles made it 6-0 in the third when Belles jacked her second two-run homer of the day.
