ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell baseball team will try to start a winning streak when it travels to Syracuse for a Tuesday doubleheader with Le Moyne, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 p.m. at Dick Rockwell Field. The two teams met two weeks ago in Ithaca with the Dolphins claiming a 9-5 victory in the home opener for the Big Red.
Cornell's offense is led by
Marshall Yanzick, who has a .321 batting average on the season, one of two regulars to post a batting average higher than .300 on the year.
Mickey Brodsky joins Yanzick in that category, as the senior is hitting .316 on the season.
Brian Billigen is right behind, hitting .299 with a team-best seven home runs this season. Billigen has also driven in 17 runs this season while scoring 17 times.
On the mound, three Cornell starters have shared the bulk of the pitching duties, as
Jadd Schmeltzer,
Taylor Wood and
Corey Pappel have combined for 113.1 of the 196.2 innings worked this season. Schmeltzer has a team-best 4.64 earned-run average in 33 innings,w hile Wood has two of the four Cornell victories on the year at 2-4 in 41.1 innings of work, also posting a 5.01 earned-run average. Wood also has a team-best 32 strikeouts on the season.
Le Moyne enters Tuesday's doubleheader on a five-game losing skid, coming on the heels of a four-game win streak. The Dolphin offense is led by Pat Wiese, the only regular player batting over .300 on the season. Kody O'Connor has a team-best five home runs and 23 runs batted in, while Brett Botsford and Vincent Redmond share the team lead with 22 runs scored. On the mound, Ed Kohout has a team-best 3.83 earned-run average in 44.2 innings of work, striking out a team-high 39 batters. Mark Kuzma has a pair of wins on the season, matched only by Tom McDermott's 2-0 mark. The Dolphins have five saves on the year, with Jerome Werniuk picking up two of those.
