Softball Drops Series Finale At Columbia, 6-4

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Columbia rallied twice after Cornell took the lead and the home team earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory on Monday afternoon to cap a four-game Ivy League split. THe Lions improved to 11-24 (3-9 Ivy), while the Big Red slipped to 18-18-1 (7-5 Ivy).

Marissa Amiraian was 2-for-3 with a run scored for Cornell, which had six hits, but just two over the final six innings. Elizabeth Dalrymple was hit around, allowing 12 hits and six runs over 6.0 innings of work in the circle. SHe walked one and didn't strike out a batter.

Cornell scored three unearned runs in the first and the Big Red pounded out four hits, including an RBI single by Villalon and an RBI double by Tomlinson. The Lions cut the deficit to 3-1 with a home run by Maggie Johnson to lead off the bottom of the second, her third of the series and fifth of the year. The home team tied the contest at 3-3 after scoring twice in the third with an RBI groundout by Jennifer Bergeron and a run-scoring single by Anne Marie Skylis.

The Big Red regained the lead at 4-3 in the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Jenny Edwards, but the Lions shot right back to take their first lead in the fifth. A leadoff home run by Emily Snodgrass and an RBI single by Stephanie Yagi made it 5-4. The Lions added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single by Morgan Cook. Columbia retired the final 11 Big Red hitters, the final 3.2 innings by relief pitcher Prophet Gaspard, who picked up the victory.

Cornell returns to action for a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m. when it meets Colgate at Niemand*Robison Field.
