Game 1 Box Score (Cornell 2, Colgate 0)
Game 2 Box Score (Cornell 8, Colgate 0 - 5 innings)
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior pitchers Elizabeth Dalrymple and Ali Tomlinson each threw complete game shutouts, surrendering just three hits total in pushing the Big Red to a doubleader sweep of Colgate on Wednesday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Cornell won game one 2-0, then earned an 8-0 win in five innings in game two. The Big Red improved to 20-18-1 with the wins, while the Raiders slipped to 19-17.
Dalrymple struck out 13 and allowed just two hits in earning the game one victory. She didn't surrender a walk in improving to 13-6 on the season. Cornell scored what proved to be the game winner in the third when Erica Gaeta drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Katrina Conklin was sacrificed to second by Morgan Cawley. Senior Marissa Amiraian then ripped a one-out single up the middle to plate the only run Cornell would need. The Big Red added an insurance run in the four when Kristen Towne doubled and scored when Bellis drove a single through the right side for an RBI.
Dalrymple was in complete control, striking out 10 over the first four innings. Belles was 2-for-2 against Colgate ace Rachel LeCoq, who took the hard-luck loss despite surrendering just five hits over her six innings of work.
Cornell's offense came alive in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the first inning before making an out. Amiraian was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a Jenny Edwards double. Erin Keene drove both runners in after a single down the leftfield line to make it 2-0. Towne and Belles both walked to load the bases, and the lead runner scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Tomlinson helped herself with an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0. Sam Creamer then chased Colgate starter Michelle Hollebeke with a single through the left side to make it 6-0.
The Big Red added two runs in the fourth to create a run-rule situation. RBI singles by Katie Watts and Tomlinson pushed the Cornell lead to 8-0, and Tomlinson stranded a Colgate runner on third in the fifth to end the game.
Tomlinson was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in the win, but it was her effort in the circle that was extraordinary. She allowed just one single to Tera Vaughn in the fourth, striking out six without issuing a walk to even her record at 6-6. Keene and Edwards also were 2-for-3 at the plate in the second contest.
Cornell begins a key four-game series against division rival Penn on Saturday, April 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field.
