Game 1 Box Score (Cornell 10, Penn 2 - 5 innings)
Game 2 Box Score (Cornell 8, Penn 6)
ITHACA, N.Y. -- In a doubleheader that featured 12 home runs, it was pitching and defense that ended up handing Cornell a sweeep of Ivy League South Division rival Penn on Friday afternoon at Ithaca College's Kostrinsky Field. The Big Red won game one 10-2 in five innings, then came from behind for an 8-6 victory in game two. Cornell, which entered the day just a game ahead of the Quakers, improved to 22-18-1 (9-5 Ivy), while the Quakers fell to 15-18-1 (6-8 Ivy).
Two-time Ivy League Pitcher of the Year Elizabeth Dalrymple earned wins in both ends of the doubleheader, the first with a complete game four-hitter than included 10 strikeouts, and the second out of the bullpen with three innings of relief work. Of course, she was helped out by seven Big Red home runs, including two in game one by freshman Jenny Edwards and two in game two by senior Ali Tomlinson. Tomlinson also came back after a rough beginning in the circle in game two as the Big Red fell behind 4-0, but kept Penn there as Cornell rallied to tie with back-to-back-to-back homers in the fourth. Tomlinson's home run was the final blow and tied the contest at 4-4, with Erin Belles and Christina Villalon adding blasts. Tomlinson then slammed a three-run shot to put Cornell ahead for the first time in the fifth innings. She ended the game 2-for-3 with two homers and four RBI. The Big Red collected 12 hits in the nightcap, including four home runs and seven total for extra bases. Both Villalon and Belles also went 2-for-3 in game two.
Game one saw the Big Red explode for six runs in the fifth to end the game, including a pinch-hit grand slam by junior Erica Gaeta. Edwards also blasted a pair of bombs, the second and third of her career. Edwards ended game one 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. Marissa Amiraian, who went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, also scored three times and Erin Keene had two hits.
Penn hit five home runs of its owns, including three by Jennifer Melendez. Melendez hit two in game one and another in game two as the Quakers built a 4-0 lead.
Saturday's scheduled doubleheader at Niemand*Robison Field has been postponed due to expected inclement weather and will be made up on Monday, April 25 at 2 p.m. when the two teams again meet at Ithaca College's Kostrinsky Field.
