Polo Hosts Northeast Regionals, Looks For Spots In National Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams will host the Northeast Intercollegiate Regional beginning on Friday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Oxley Equestrian Center The four-team men's tournament will feature Cornell, Skidmore, Connecticut and Kemptville, while the women's tournament includes Cornell, Skidmore, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The winner of each regional tournament will earn a spot in the national tournament from April 18-23, also at Oxley Equestrian Center.

The women, ranked No. 1 nationally with a 17-0 record, are in search of the program's 18 regional title and third consecutive. The Big Red has outscored opponents 373-132. The Big Red is 6-0 against other teams in the regional this season, topping Massachusetts once in Ithaca (W, 34-1), sweeping a home-and-home series from Connecticut (W, 28-6 at home; W, 22-4 in Storrs, Conn.) and  winning all three contsts against Skidmore (W, 25-13, 14-5 and 21-6).

The men, also ranked among the top five nationally, is 12-4 this season and brings a seven-game win streak into the tournament. Cornell is 4-1 against teams in the regional tournament, having topped Kemptville at home (22-13), splitting two games with Connecticut (L, 18-17 at home; W, 22-10 in Amherst, Mass.) and sweeping contests against Skidmore (W, 30-4 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; W, 31-3 at home). The Big Red have won 17 regional titles in school history, including taking each of the last eight crowns.
