Game 1 Box Score (Cornell 14, Princeton 1 - 5 innings)
Game 2 Box Score (Princeton 12, Cornell 2)
ITHACA, N.Y. -- It was a tale of two games, and the Big Red offense that was so dominant in game one was just as quiet in game two as the Big Red split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Cornell honored its three seniors and played inspired softball in a 14-1 win in the opener in five innings, then dropped a 12-2 decision in the nightcap. Cornell moved to 26-20-1 (11-7 Ivy), while the Tigers ended their season 16-26 (7-13 Ivy). The Big Red remains two games up on Penn, and a makeup of their washed out doubleheader will now be rescheduled for this week.
Cornell will try and reschedule with Penn, the South Division second place team, for midweek. The Big Red need to sweep or split the doubleheader against the Quakers to win the South Division title. If Penn sweeps the doubleheader, that will force a third contest, a one-game playoff to break the divisional tie. The winner would earn a spot opposite North Division champion Harvard. The Crimson will host the best-of-three Ivy League playoff series this coming weekend.
Cornell pounded out 16 hits in just five innings of game one, with Morgan Cawley playing the star. After entering the game with six RBI in 28 games, the junior was 2-for-2 with a double, home run and six RBI. Marissa Amiraian and Lauren Bucolo each went 3-for-4. Freshman Jenny Edwards hit her fifth homer of the season to add three more runs to the total. Each of Cornell's starters had at least one hit, with Sam Creamer adding a 2-for-2 day and Erin Keene scored three runs.
In the circle, Elizabeth Dalrymple and Ali Tomlinson combined to allow just three hits and one run while striking out five in 5.0 innings of work. A nine-run second inning put the Big Red at ease en route to cruising to the win that tied head coach Dick Blood atop Cornell's all-time wins list for a head coach with 541, matching legendary Hall of Fame baseball coach Ted Thoren.
Game two was a complete reversal as the Tigers posted 13 hits and scored multiple runs in the second, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Megan Rounsifer had a big contest, going 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs and seven RBI. She made a winner out of Alex Payton, who scattered five hits and one earned run in the complete game victory. Big Red freshman Christina Villalon was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the contest.
