SPRING CITY, Pa. – For the third straight season and the seventh time overall in head coach Donna Hornibrook's eight year tenure with Cornell, the Big Red opened the season with a victory, defeating Big East rival Villanova, 1-0, at The Training Center in Spring City, Pa. With the win, Cornell snapped a two-game losing streak to the Wildcats.

The new look Big Red, which replaced six starters lost to graduation, put in a solid effort overall and got seven saves from sophomore Carolyn Horner in her first career start to earn the victory. Junior midfielder Genna Collins scored the game-winner in the 21st minute when she converted a penalty corner, with the assists going to Ann DiPastina and Hannah Balleza.

Villanova outshot Cornell, 13-9, and held the slim edge in penalty corners, 5-4.

Wildcat goalie Megan Goelz was called on to make just four saves.

Cornell is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 4, as it opens the home portion of its schedule against Lock Haven at Marsha Dodson Field at 2 p.m.
