Box Score PHILADELPHIA -- Freshman midfielder
Claire MacManus scored her first collegiate goal, but the Big Red women's soccer team surrendered a pair of second-half goals on Friday night to lose at Penn, 2-1.
MacManus' goal in the 55th minute tied the game at 1. Senior midfielder
Abigail Apistolas served a free kick deep in Quakers territory from the right side that MacManus -- a native of nearby Rosemont, Pa. -- headed back across the box and inside the far post. It was a fitting way for the Big Red to get on the board in a game in which it was dominant in the air.
But it wasn't enough on this night against the defending Ivy League champions. Penn got on the board just 1:36 into the second half on Clara Midgley's strike. Marin McDermott scored the winner in the 75th minute when she flicked a corner kick from the near post into the net.
The Quakers held a 13-2 advantage in shots in the second half after a scoreless first half that featured some quality scoring chances from Cornell (2-9, 0-2 Ivy League). A through ball from the right side in the 14th minute sent freshman
Kerry Schubert away on a clean break from 30 yards. But Penn keeper Sarah Banks was quick off her line to cut down the angle, then made the save while falling to her right. It turned out to be her only save of the night.
Apistolas took aim from long distance three minutes later, but the shot sailed high. Penn's best chance to get on the board in the opening frame came on a free kick from 25 yards, but the shot dipped over the four-wide wall and was easily corraled by senior goalkeeper
Megan Bartlett. Then Cornell had another break with less than a minute remaining in the half, but the ball skipped away from
Mary Keroack as the defense pursued and Banks collected the ball.
Bartlett, making her third consecutive start, made a season-high 10 saves in the loss. Cornell has a week off before resuming Ivy League play at home with a game against Harvard at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8. The game kicks off a doubleheader at Berman Field with the two schools' men's teams, who clash at 4 p.m.
