Balleza Matches School Record As Field Hockey Downs Holy Cross

10/28/2012 5:02:00 PM

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – After a slow start on a brutally cold afternoon, the Big Red field hockey team got hot, scoring three second half goals en route to a 4-0 victory over Holy Cross on Marsha Dodson Field. The final goal of the game, scored in the 60th minute, gave Hannah Balleza her 14th of the season, matching Cornell's single-season record along with Kelley Boutin (1999) and Linda Miller (1982).

In addition to the goal, Balleza recorded one assist to move within two points of the Big Red's single-season points record.

Cornell (8-8) also received goals from Brittany Thompson, Marisa Siergiej and Ann DiPastina, while Taylor Standiford registered one assist.

The Big Red completely dominated the game, outshooting the Crusaders, 20-3, and Carolyn Horner needed to make only one save to earn her fifth shutout of the season, moving her into a tie for third place in Cornell history for shutouts in a single-season along with Yanaka Bernal (1990).

Thompson opened the scoring for the Big Red when she collected a rebound off a Kat Matchett save and struck a reverse stick shot into the corner to make it a 1-0 game in the 14th minute.

After taking the 1-0 lead into the half, Siergiej wasted little time extending Cornell's lead in the 40th minute when she scored on one of the Big Red's three penalty shots awarded on the afternoon.

Despite carrying the play, Cornell would not score again until the 57:28 mark when Ann DiPastina carried the ball down the right sideline and scored from the baseline on what seemed a nearly impossible angle.

That goal drove Matchett from the game, despite making 14 saves. Holy Cross back-up Kelly Stosky came in and allowed Balleza's goal without registering a save.

The Big Red will play its regular season finale next weekend when it welcomes Dartmouth to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, No. 3 at noon. Prior to the game, the team will honor its three seniors – Genevieve Collins, Kat DiPastina and Paige Mollineaux.
