WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Big Red sprint football team came into its clash against Army on Friday night undefeated at 3-0 and 2-0 in league play, but the Black Knights were undefeated as well and were the only team to leave Shea Stadium that way.
Though it managed to hold Army to a season-low point total, Cornell gave up 492 yards on defense and fell 38-14 on the Black Knights' home field.
The Big Red (3-1, 2-1 CSFL) suffered its second consecutive defeat to Army (4-0, 3-0) after knocking off the Black Knights in 2010 when both teams were undefeated as well.
The Big Red's first score came late in the third quarter. Taking possession far from the end zone, quarterback
Brendan Miller hooked up with
Abe Mellinger for a 69-yard touchdown pass that made the game 24-7 with 1:09 remaining in the third. Starting the drive on its own 34, Cornell gave up a sack for a loss of three yards. But on the next play, Miller found Mellinger to put the Big Red on the scoreboard.
The momentum barely lasted 30 seconds. After the kickoff, Army got possession on its own 31. After two plays netted the Black Knights 13 yards and a first down, quarterback Javier Sustaita hit John Herina for a 56-yard touchdown, and Army was ahead 31-7 just 49 seconds after the Big Red's score.
Army scored one more touchdown to officially put the game away and go ahead 38-7 midway through the fourth.
The Black Knights gave up just one more Big Red touchdown late in the game when Mellinger again caught a long touchdown from Miller. With 2:54 remaining, the two hooked up for 49 yards, capping Cornell's scoring.
Cornell's defense held strong in the first half, allowing just 10 points total by a team that had been averaging more than 50 per game. Army kicked an early field goal and then scored a touchdown with 28 seconds left in the half to make it 10-0 when Sustaita found Cody Nyp for 46 yards. Sustaita, the CSFL's leading passer, added 314 yards and five touchdowns to his season total.
Miller ended the evening with 342 passing yards, while Mellinger had three catches for 124 and
Spenser Gruenenfelder had 10 receptions for 124.
Benjamin Herrera was the Big Red's leading rusher with 40 yards on three carries.
Cornell next plays against Navy at Schoellkopf Field on Friday night at 7 p.m.
