ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team remained unbeaten by capturing the 2012 William S. Field Invitational on Sunday morning at Oxley Equestrian Center. The Big Red men lost to tournament runner-up Colorado State in the semifinals.

In Sunday's final, Cornell took on a Virginia squad looking to avenge a shootout loss to the Big Red at home a few weeks ago. The Cavaliers came out strong and jumped to a quick lead. UVa held a 7-4 lead after one. The second chukker started with the same lineup of Ali Hoffman, Kailey Eldredge and Anna Winslow. At about a minute and a half in, Winslow's horse lost its footing in a bump on a turn and went down. The horse was ok and Winslow was shaken and replaced by Devin Cox as a precaution. Cornell was down by five at one point, but fought back to pull the score to 11-9 in favor of Virginia. As the two teams battled in the third neither would give ground as the Cavaliers would keep their two-goal advantage heading into the fourth at 15-13. Cornell came out strong in the fourth and soon took their first lead at 17-16. Keeping the pressure on, the Big Red kept scoring and extended the lead to the final tally of 20-16 for a 7-1 run in the fourth. Eldredge tallied seven goals, Cox had six, Hoffman notched four and there were three pony goals.

The Cornell women played Kentucky on Saturday and jumped to a 9-1 first chukker lead. The Wildcats would not go away though, as they fought bac, but could never really close the gap. Though they got as close as five goals Cornell lengthened the lead back to eight and would finish with the victory at 20-12. Eldredge tallied eight, Winslow notched six, Cox tallied  four and Hoffman had two.

In the Friday nightcap, the men took on Colorado State. CSU led 7-4 after one, before the Big Red responded by taking the lead at 15-12 into the half. The teams played even in the third as Cornell stayed ahead by three at 21-18. The Rams fought back to take the lead in the fourth at 23-22. Cornell tied it at 23-23, only to see CSU take it back at 24-23. Cornell came within a few feet of tying the game but could not get the matching goal and lost by that score. Nik Feldman tallied 15 goals, Branden Van Loon had four and Nick Stieg scored three with one penalty goal.
