ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams were able to continue their home dominance with each taking down Connecticut this weekend at Oxley Equestrian Center. The men took a 26-16 victory on Friday, with the women following it up with a 23-5 triumph on Saturday.
The men's team opened with
Connor Pardell,
Hakan Karabey, and
Justin Schick against the Huskies. Connecticut burst out to a 7-1 advantage before Cornell rallied within 7-4 at the end of the first chiller. Alex Langlois replaced Schick for the second and the Big Red quickly caught and passed the Huskies to never relinquish the lead. At the half, the home team led 11-9. Pardell was joined by Schick and
Branden Van Loon for the third and the Big Red stretched its lead to 23-12 heading into the fourth. A lineup of Langlois, Karabey and Nick Stieg came in to finish off the match as Cornell would cruise to the 26-16 victory. Pardell led the Big Red with nine goals, Van Loon added five, Schick notched three, Karabey and the horses each had two and Langlois and Stieg each had one.
On Saturday, the Cornell women were the one to throw the first punch, hopping out to a 9-1 advantage. They would never look back, as the team of
Kailey Eldredge, Maddy Olberg and
Mariah Lavitt cruised in the first.
Ali Hoffman replaced Eldredge in the second and the Big Red only edged out slightly more taking a 12-3 lead into half. Eldredge returned in the third and helped stretch the lead to 19-5 heading into the fourth. Hoffman and Eldredge swapped again in the fourth and Cornell went on to win 23-5 over the Huskies. Eldredge had 10 goals, Lavitt recorded five and Olberg and Hoffman each added four.
