Clare Fitzpatrick notched her 10th career double-double, but the women's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold night from behind the arc in a 52-49 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at American Bank Center. The loss leaves the Big Red with a 5-4 record, while the Islanders improved to 1-9.
Fitzpatrick had a team-high 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Big Red, marking the first time this season she's had more than five boards in a game.
Allyson DiMagno added 17 points and eight rebounds.
Despite the loss, AMCC's 52 points marked the lowest total among Cornell opponents this season. The Big Red stormed out to a 10-2 lead just 4:01 in. The Islanders chipped away to cut their deficit to four a few minutes later, then went on a 18-2 run to build a 12-point lead late in the frame.
Fitzpatrick and DiMagno accounted for all of the Big Red's first 26 points – 11 apiece in the first half – before
Taylor Flynn's 3-pointer with 15:12 remaining in the game. The Islanders' lead grew to as big as 14 points before the Big Red closed the game on a 12-2 run.
Spencer Lane's layup with 2:37 remaining was followed by a pair of DiMagno free throws to make the score 52-47. Fitzpatrick converted a layup with 47 seconds remaining on a feed from
Shelby Lyman, and it was suddenly a one-possession game.
Lane blocked a shot with 17 seconds remaining to set up Cornell for one last chance, by a 3-point attempt with four seconds remaining wouldn't fall. The Big Red was just 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from
behind the arc on the night.
Cornell's swing through the Lone Star State continues on Thursday with a visit to No. 18/20 Texas in the programs' first-ever meeting.
