HANOVER, N.H. – The men's tennis team finished fourth at the ECAC Indoor Championships over the weekend, dropped a 4-2 match with Dartmouth on Sunday to wrap up play at the three-day event.
 
Using the modified 6/1 scoring system, host and fifth seed Dartmouth used four victories in singles to render the doubles match unnecessary. Four of the Big Green's wins featured a tiebreaker in the second set. Second-seeded Cornell (5-5) got its victories in straight sets from sophomore Venkat Iyer at No. 1 and freshman Danny Riggs at No. 3. Iyer was undefeated in his three matches over the weekend.
 
On Saturday, the 50th-ranked Big Red dropped a close 4-3 match with Brown on in the semifinals. The teams split the six singles matches, meaning the doubles point the sixth-seeded Bears picked up in a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot was the difference. Iyer (No. 1), freshman Sam Fleck (No. 2) and freshman Quoc-Daniel Nguyen (No. 4) picked up the Big Red's points in singles play.
 
On Friday, the Big Red defeated Columbia, 4-2, to advance to the semifinals. Cornell dropped the doubles point before surging ahead in the singles portion of the match. Freshman Alex Sidney improved to 6-1 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Bert Vancura at the No. 5 spot.
 
Freshman Jason Luu won in straight sets at No. 6, then Riggs won a three-set match at No. 3 to give the Big Red its third point. The clinched came from No. 1 Iyer, who defeated Haig Schneiderman in a third-set tiebreaker. Nguyen was also ahead in the third set of his match at No. 4, but the match wasn't finished.
 
Cornell hits the road again next weekend for the Blue-Gray Invitational from Feb. 24-26 at Montgomery, Ala.
