ITHACA, N.Y. -- Two-time defending Ivy League champion Princeton went on a 22-0 run early in the first half and cruised to a 75-39 victory over Cornell on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red dropped to 10-13 (4-5 Ivy), while the Tigers stayed unbeaten in conference action (9-0) while moving to 19-4 overall.
Cornell jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, but the Tigers broke the game open with 22 consecutive points while holding the home team scoreless for 9:31. The Big Red wasn't able to get within single digits the rest of the way.
Princeton shot 52 percent from the floor overall, made 8-of-17 from 3-point range (47 percent) and held a 43-25 rebounding advantage. Cornell was able to hit just 32 percent of its field goals in the loss.
Ten different Big Red players scored with
Taylor Flynn leading the way with nine points. She added four rebounds in the contest to lead the team in both categories.
Allyson DiMagno had four points and four steals.
Three different Princeton players reached double figures for the Tigers, with Niveen Rasheed pacing the way with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Devona Allgood added 13 points and nine rebounds and Lauren Edwards scored 10 points. The Tigers assisted on 21 of its 32 field goals in the victory.
The Big Red opened the game with free throws by Anyanwu and a jumper by DiMagno to get the crowd gathered for the Play 4 Kay game on its feet. From there on out, it was all Tigers. Lauren Edwards got Princeton on the board a little more than two minutes in, then hit 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to make it 14-4. By the time Rasheed hit jumpers on back-to-back possessions, Princeton led 22-4 with 9:41 left in the half and Cornell was on its heels.
Taylor Flynn broke the lid on the bucket with a 3-pointer, but the Big Red couldn't get any closer than it did on consecutive baskets by
Shelby Lyman and
Clare Fitzpatrick to cut the Princeton lead to 29-16. Unfortunately, the Tigers were able to close the half on a 10-2 run to go into halftime up 39-18.
Princeton methodically extended the lead throughout the second half, going up by as many as 37 as both teams cleared their benches in the final minutes.
Cornell remains at home next weekend as it plays host to Brown and Yale at Newman Arena. The Big Red faces the Bears on Friday, Feb. 24 and the Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 25. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
