Hot-Shooting Yale Tops Women's Hoops, 69-58

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Yale hit eight 3-pointers and shot 49 percent from the floor overall to claim a 69-58 victory over Cornell on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. The Bulldogs improved to 16-10 (8-4 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 11-14 (5-6 Ivy) with the loss.

Maka Anyanwu scored 17 points and had six rebounds and both Taylor Flynn and Allyson DiMagno notched 11 points for the Big Red, but 21 Cornell turnovers and Yale's hot shooting was enough for the Bulldogs to complete the season sweep. The visitors shots 61 percent after halftime and drilled 5-of-8 shots from 3-point range to earn the victory. Cornell's Clare Fitzpatrick scored six points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the home team won the battle of the boards, 35-32.

Yale's Janna Graf had 13 points and eight rebounds, Michelle Cashen scored 12 with eight rebounds and Megan Vazquez also tallied 12 points for the victors.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead 4:26 into the game and appeared as though it was well on its way to victory before Cornell started to slowly chip away. After getting it back down to four at 13-9 on a jumper by Flynn, Yale reclaimed the double figure lead and would trade baskets the final seven minutes to enter halftime leading 34-24.

Cornell made several second half charges, getting within six points once, but each time the Big Red threatened, Yale responded with a 3-pointer. The Bulldogs were able to protect the lead late for much of the final 10 minutes. The home team got within nine points with four minutes to play, but Cashen answered wih a jumper and Allie Messimer drained a 3-pointer to quickly get back in the driver's seat.

The Big Red hit the road for the final time this season when it visits Dartmouth on Friday, March 2 at 7 p.m., then heads to Harvard on Saturday, March 3 at 7 p.m.
