NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman
Sam Fleck won his first of his collegiate match from the No. 1 singles spot, but the Big Red men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match on Friday at Old Dominion.
The teams split the six singles matches, but the host Monarchs were able to win two of three doubles tilts to secure the pivotal doubles point. The Big Red's freshman team of
Alex Sidney and
Danny Riggs won the No. 1 doubles match, 8-2. The match was tied 3-3 before Old Dominion's Alfredo Rodriguez won the No. 6 singles match, 7-6, 6-4.
Fleck appeared at the No. 1 spot for just the second time this season, winning in dominant fashion over Old Dominion's Krzysztof Muzalewski, 6-1, 6-2. Muzalewski is ranked 20th in the Atlantic Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
Freshman
Jason Luu played above the fifth spot for the first time, also winning in convincing fashion with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Albert Ochagavia. Classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen won the No. 5 singles match, 7-5, 7-6, to give the Big Red a 3-2 lead. The win gives both Luu and Nguyen eight victories on the season, which ties them for the team lead with Riggs, Sidney and sophomore
Venkat Iyer, who did not compete Friday.
The Big Red wraps up the quick two-match trip with a late Sunday morning match at Virginia Commonwealth.
