PROVIDENCE, R.I. –
Venkat Iyer,
Sam Fleck and
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen all won singles matches, but the men's tennis dropped its sixth match with a 4-3 score on Saturday against 60th-ranked Brown at Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bears won all three doubles matches, meaning a split of the six singles matches was enough to end a three-match losing streak to the Big Red. Iyer won his No. 1 singles match against Soufian Azargui, 6-3, 6-4. It was Iyer's second victory over Azargui in the 2011-12 calendar.
Fleck won in three sets at No. 2 against Brandon Burke, avenging a loss to Burke in a bracket championship match in October's Dartmouth Invitational. The Brown player that Fleck beat in that tournament also lost Saturday, with
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen secured a 7-6(4), 6-3 victory over Daniel Hirschberg at the No. 6 spot.
Eleven of the Big Red's losses have now come to teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Top 75. Three of its four Ivy League matches have been decided by one point.
Cornell heads west for another Ivy League matchup on Sunday when it visits Yale at 2 p.m.
