UConn Rallies Late, Tops Men's Polo For Regional Title

4/2/2012 8:21:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's polo team entered the fourth chukker with a six-goal lead and all the momentum, but Connecticut rallied in the fourth to prevent the Big Red's 19th USPA Northeast Regional title with a 22-21 victory on Sunday afternoon at Oxley Equestrian Center. Cornell still has hopes for an at-large bid to the national championships with its 9-7 overall record.

Cornell got off on the right foot by scoring six goals, but the Huskies would not go away. The first chukker ended with the Big Red up 9-3. UConn quickly cut into that lead in the second and by the half Cornell's lead was down to three at 12-9. The Big Red regrouped after the half and stretched the lead back to six at 20-14  going into the fourth. Cornell struggled in the fourth and could not catch a break as several fouls that were called and then waved off as no fouls cost Cornell breakaways. The Huskies were able to overtake the Big Red in the final minute, and the Big Red's chance to tie with 40 seconds left on a penalty shot missed as UConn took the match.

Connor Pardell scored five goals, Branden Van Loon notched six goals and  Nik Feldman, who earned All-Star accolades, scored nine goals for the Big Red.
