CAMDEN, N.J. - In the first ever Ivy League women's rowing championship, the Big Red turned in its best performance in 22 years, taking the silver medal in the varsity 8 race, falling to Harvard by just under three seconds. Cornell placed fourth as a team, as it was edged by third-place Yale by just one-point.

The second-place finish by the varsity 8 gives Cornell its first medal since the 1993 crew took third in the Grand Finals of the Eastern Sprints and is only the second silver medal in program history (1990). Including the 2012 race, Cornell has medaled just five times with third place finishes in 1989, 1992 and 1993.

"I am extremely proud of the team's overall performance," said Hilary Gehman, the Staley Head Coach of Women's Rowing. "This is the most successful team finish we've had in many years and I think that it puts us in great position to get an at-large bid to NCAAs. I am really pleased with the fact that we had such a great finish at the inaugural Ivy League Championship."

In addition to the varsity 8 race, Cornell also medaled in the third varsity 8 (third) and the varsity 4B (second). The varsity 4A finished fourth overall and the second varsity 8 took sixth.

Cornell awaits its NCAA fate, which will be determined on Tuesday, May15, when the tournament field is announced at 5 p.m. The selection show can be seen live online at www.NCAA.com.
