ITHACA, N.Y. — The undefeated men's and women's squash teams get their seasons back in gear this weekend with a home tripleheader. Ivy League rivals Yale and Brown will descend on Belkin Squash Courts before a non-league contest against St. Lawrence wraps up the busy weekend.
The fourth-ranked Cornell men's team (5-0) edged Columbia, 5-4, in its last action on Dec. 2, which also served as the squad's Ivy League opener. Sophomores
Aditya Jagtap and
Ryan Todd, and freshmen
Abhijit Malik and
Graham Dietz are all a perfect 5-0 this season, with sophomore Jay Lindseth also undefeated after two matches at the No. 9 spot.
The last time the Big Red tangled with Yale, it secured just its third victory in 53 all-time meetings between the schools. Cornell won, 8-1, in the quarterfinals of the Potter Cup to earn the program's first-ever trip to the semifinals. Yale (3-0) slipped all the way to sixth after the national tournament, which is where it rests coming into this weekend's action.
The Big Red women's team (4-0) is also off to a strong start, holding steady at No. 6 in the country after a dramatic 5-4 victory over Stanford on Nov. 18 and a 9-0 thrashing of Columbia in its league opener on Dec. 2. Senior co-captain
Margaret Remsen and freshman
Abbey Foster are both 4-0 individually, while top-of-the-order stalwarts
Danielle Letourneau and
Jessenia Pacheco have each won their first three matches to date. Freshman
Reut Odinak is also 3-0 in her first collegiate matches.
Yale (3-0) will be a staunch test for the Big Red, holding down the nation's second-ranked spot following a pair of 9-0 victories over Colby and Williams last weekend. The Bulldogs hold a 17-1 advantage in the all-time series, with the Big Red's lone victory coming on Jan. 20, 2001.
Cornell holds big all-time advantages against Brown (19-9) and St. Lawrence (7-0) on the men's side following 9-0 victories against each opponent last season. The Big Red women's team has enjoyed similar success against the Saints (5-0), while making up ground in recent years against the Bears. Brown holds a 12-7 edge in that series, but Cornell has won the last four meetings by 9-0 margins.
Both matches against Yale will be begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The men's match against Brown will start at 10 a.m. Sunday, with the women's match to follow at noon. Both matches against St. Lawrence are then scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
