No. 10 Oregon State Edges Past Wrestling, 23-20

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Cornell wrestling team was edged out by No. 10 Oregon State, 23-20, on Sunday afternoon in a dual that came down to the heavyweight bout. Four Big Red wrestlers won their matches by bonus points in front of a crowd of 3,039 people in Newman Arena. Returning NCAA Champion, Steve Bosak, pinned his opponent at 184 pounds, while Nahshon Garrett (125) and Kyle Dake (165) won by technical fall in their respective weight classes. Freshman Duke Pickett also notched a win for Cornell earning a bonus point with a major decision at 174 pounds. Cornell moves to 9-3 overall for the season, while Oregon State improves to 7-3.

The dual opened at 125 pounds with Garrett facing Joey Palmer. Garrett had an 11-0 lead after the first period with a takedown and three, three-point nearfalls. Garrett racked up 2:56 in riding time in the first. Palmer chose to start the second at neutral. Garrett notched two more takedowns before the end of the period. Garrett quickly escaped from his starting down position. With another takedown and three back points, Garrett won a 21-3 technical fall in 6:26.

At 133 pounds, Bricker Dixon took on Drew Van Anrooy. Van Anrooy grabbed a takedown with only four seconds off the clock, and Dixon escaped midway through the period. Van Anrooy escaped to open the second, and with 30 seconds left in the period countered a shot by Dixon for a takedown. Dixon chose down in the third, but was unable to escape. With 3:40 in riding time, Van Anrooy won a 6-1 decision.

No. 4 ranked Mike Mangrum of OSU wrestled No. 6 Mike Nevinger. Mangrum held a 2-0 lead after the first with a takedown. Mangrum chose neutral to start the second, and neither wrestler scored. Nevinger chose to start the third on top, but Mangrum reversed him. With 2:47 in riding time, the Oregon State wrestler won a 5-0 decision.
 
At 149 pounds, No. 14 Chris Villalonga got on the board first with a takedown 14 seconds in against No. 7 Scott Sakaguchi. Villalonga racked up 1:46 in riding time before Sakaguchi reversed him to tie the bout at 2-2. Villalonga was unable to escape from his starting down position in the second. Sakaguchi quickly escaped from his starting down position in the third and notched a takedown after countering a shot from the Cornell wrestler. The OSU grappler added three back points and another takedown to win an 11-3 major decision.
 
At 157 pounds, Jesse Shanaman took the mat against No. 11 RJ Pena. Pena had three takedowns in the first and added three back points when he caught Shanaman trying to roll out for an escape.  Shanaman was unable to escape from his opening down position in the second. Pena chose neutral to open the third. Pena grabbed three more takedowns in the third to win a 16-5 major decision. Oregon State held a 14-5 lead heading into halftime.

At 165 pounds, No. 1 ranked Dake faced Seth Thomas. Dake held a 5-0 lead after the first with a takedown and three back points. Dake chose to start the second down and almost immediately reversed his opponent. Dake added two more takedowns and two, three-point nearfalls to wrap up the second with a 16-3 advantage. Thomas chose to start the third at neutral. Dake knew that another takedown would end the bout with a tech fall, so he took his time looking to pin his opponent off a shot. Dake tried to catch Thomas with a cradle, but settled for a 19-3 win by technical fall in 6:21.

At 174 pounds, Pickett faced Austin Morehead. Pickett was up 5-0 with a takedown and three back points, before Morehead reversed him. Morehead chose to start the second down, and Pickett almost pinned him, but was awarded three back points instead. Pickett chose neutral to open the third. With two takedowns and another three-point nearfall, Pickett won a 16-4 major decision. With the four team points, the dual was tied at 14-14.

No. 4 ranked Bosak took on Brian Engdahl at 184 pounds. Bosak took down his opponent 29 seconds into the bout and immediately worked to start turning him. Bosak added two, three-point nearfalls to hold an 8-0 advantage. With an arm bar, Bosak flipped Engdahl to win by fall in 2:24. Bosak's six team points brought the crowd to its feet as Cornell held a 20-14 lead.
Sophomore Billy George faced No. 8 ranked Taylor Meeks at 197 pounds. After a scoreless first period, George escaped from his opening down position in the second for the only point of the period. Meeks chose down in the third and immediately escaped. Meeks won a 3-1 decision with a takedown with 33 seconds left in the match.

In the last match of the dual, Jace Bennett moved up to heavyweight to take on No. 4 ranked Chad Hanke. Bennett notched the first takedown of the bout 20 seconds in, but Hanke would reverse him. Bennett escaped only to have Hanke take him down once again. Hanke chose down to open the second, escaped and added a takedown to hold a 7-3 advantage. Bennett chose top to open the third, but Hanke reversed him once again. Bennett escaped, but Hanke grabbed two more points with a takedown. Bennett would escape again, but Hanke caught him during a scramble to win by fall in 6:27 and win the dual for the Beavers.

Cornell will wrap up Ivy League action next weekend as it travels to New York City. The Big Red will wrestle at Hofstra at 1 p.m. on Saturday before heading to Columbia for a 6 p.m. dual.
