Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – In its final non-conference game of 2013, the Big Red men's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with Colgate Tuesday night on Berman Field.
The game saw freshmen
Hollis Malkowski,
Alex Sommer and
Evan King each make the first starts of their careers for Cornell, as well as numerous position changes for some of the team's upperclassmen as the team looked for solutions to it's early-season scoring troubles. Though passes were crisp and one-touch plays were on point most of the night, the team still struggles in the penalty area and in close most of the night.
Cornell didn't register a shot on goal until the 41st minute, and saw most of its veritable scoring opportunities come with time winding down in the second overtime.
In a span of less than one minute in the second extra session, the Big Red peppered Colgate with five shots and forced goalkeeper Liam Stapleton to make three saves.
The first shot came midway through the 107th minute when
Ralph Lee Price IV crossed the ball from the right side, and caught Stapleton out of position. His shot trickled across the goal line, but with no one waiting on the back door for Cornell the keeper had just enough time to recover and quickly play the ball into the left corner.
After shots by
Peter Chodas and
Devin Morgan were blocked by the Raiders defense, seniors
Patrick Slogic and
Jake Kirsch sent blasts of their own at Stapleton, both from inside 20 yards.
With 15 seconds to play in the second overtime
Benjamin Williams had his best scoring opportunity of the night with a wide open look from the penalty line but sent the shot wide left.
King made four saves for the Big Red; the biggest of which came early in the 105th minute when he punched a Colgate direct kick over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Cornell is now 6-3-3 on the season, while Colgate is 2-9-2.
