Box Score ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Stifling defense and a tenacious running-game helped Navy remain undefeated with a 28-7 win over Cornell sprint football on Saturday afternoon.
Cornell outgained the Midshipmen through the air 192-90, but managed just 34 yards on the ground compared to Navy's 338. In addition, Navy put consistent pressure on the Big Red offensively line and rookie play-caller Robert Pannullo, finishing with seven sacks on the day.
Navy capitalized on a Big Red fumble on a punt attempt from deep in Cornell's own end zone to open the scoring and take a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Cornell answered with 3:24 remaining in the second quarter when freshman Robert Pannullo connected with
Michael Crawford on a five-yard pass for the touchdown. The play capped a nine-play, 61-yard drive and a
John Rodriguez kick evened the score at 7-7.
Navy's Corey Garcia punched in a five-yard rush on the ensuing drive to put the Midshipmen in the lead, 14-7. The team added a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters to put the game out of reach for the Big Red and seal the victory.
John Kelder had a game-high 12 tackles, while
Kevin Nathanson had a game-high 71 yards receiving.
Cornell falls to 1-5 on the season and will play its final game of 2013 next weekend at Mansfield.
