NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The men's tennis team has pulled off a rare feat, sending two teams to the championship match of the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals. The teams of junior
Sam Fleck and freshman
Chris Vrabel and juniors
Jason Luu and
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen will play the championship match at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Cornell's own Reis Tennis Center.
Both Big Red teams won a pair of matches Monday in the fifth day of competition at the event, hosted by Yale. Fleck and Vrabel started the day with a quarterfinal victory over Brown's Justin To and Lucas de Silveira, 8-5, then an 8-3 victory over Harvard's Nicky Hu and Brian Yeung, 8-3.
On the other side of the bracket, Luu and Nguyen kicked off Monday play with an 8-5 victory over Columbia's Winston Lin and Miguel Alda. The Big Red duo had an easier time in the semifinal, cruising to an 8-2 win over Dartmouth's Cameron Ghorbani and Brendan Tannenbaum.
Given that both finalists are from the same school, the championship match has been allowed to relocated to Cornell at a time to be determined. The last time two schools had multiple semifinalists is 2010, when Princeton and Harvard both had two teams in the penultimate round. But each school sent one team to the finals, while this year's final is an all-Cornell affair.
The singles portion of the competition has also reached its final stages, with the last two standing Cornell entries eliminated Monday. Vrabel was ousted via 6-2, 6-0 loss to Columbia's Winston Lin in the quarterfinals. Fleck began his day with a 6-3, 6-5 victory over Harvard's Andrew Ball, but then fell to Lin in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-4.
