Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Big Red women's basketball team found itself in an early 10-0 hole, but battled back to earn a hard-fought 79-72 decision over Buffalo this afternoon at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. With the win, Cornell is 2-0 to start a season for the first time since the 1995-96 campaign, and just the fifth time in program history.
Senior
Allyson DiMagno led the Big Red with 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomore
Allison Bockrath tallied a career-high 13 points, thanks to a 3-of-5 performance from 3-point range. Freshman
Kerri Moran was the only other Big Red player in double-figures with 11 points but freshman
Nia Marshall and senior
Aspen Chandler tallied nine points each. Marshall also matched DiMagno for a team-high six rebounds. Freshman
Megan LeDuc handed out a career-high eight assists.
Buffalo (2-1) was led by Krsiten Sharkey (25 points, 14 rebounds) and Mackenzie Loesing (20 points, 10 rebounds) who each posted double-doubles for the home team and helped the Bulls to a 57-44 advantage on the boards.
Despite similar shooting numbers from the field, with Buffalo hitting 38 percent and the Big Red connecting on 37 percent, the visitors held a significant edge from beyond the arc, connecting on 50 percent (9-of-18), while the Bulls shot just 15.4 percent (4-of-26). Cornell also got to the foul line and converted 30-of-43 attempts, while Buffalo made just 14-of-22 tries.
Cornell trailed three points at the half, and Buffalo extended its lead to six points in the opening moments of the second stanza on a trey by Karin Moss to go up, 37-31. An impressive 10-2 run, which included eight consecutive points by
Aspen Chandler, put Cornell up, 41-39 with 17:15 to play.
The teams battled back-and-forth for the next several possessions before a decisive 12-4 run put Cornell up, 55-47 with just under 12 minutes to play. The Bulls made a push to make it a three-point game at the 9:41 mark but back-to-back layups from DiMagno and Marshall, followed by three made free throws from Marshall pushed Cornell's lead back to 10 points (62-52) with just under seven minutes to play.
Cornell extended its lead to 13 points on a layup from Marshall with 3:57 to play and from there the Big Red withheld a furious rally by the home team, which cut Cornell's lead to four points with 24 seconds to play, to earn the victory 79-72.
The Bulls got out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first seven minutes of action before a made free throw by Chandler ended the Cornell drought at the 13:20 mark. Just over three minutes later, the Big Red knotted the game at 10-10 on a trey by
Megan LeDuc. During the run, Cornell also got four points from DiMagno and a bucket by
Nicholle Aston.
Cornell would go up by three points (15-12) on another jumper from Aston, but 11 unanswered points put the home team back up, 23-15, at the 5:37 mark.
The Big Red rallied and knotted the game at 28-28 on a trey by Bockrath, but Buffalo managed to go into the intermission leading 34-31.
